Alcohol consumption, binge drinking (2014/2015)
Consumption of alcohol in adults in Germany: heavy episodic drinking
A consumption of 60 g or more pure alcohol during one drinking occasion at least once a month is termed heavy episodic drinking. This quantity corresponds to the consumption of six standard glasses of alcoholic beverages each containing about 10 g of pure alcohol. In the study "German Health Update" 2014/2015-EHIS (GEDA 2014/2015-EHIS), the instrument from the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) was used for the collection of frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption. The question concerning heavy episodic drinking was: "How often have you drunk six or more alcoholic beverages at one occasion in the last 12 months? For example during a party, a dinner, going out with friends or alone at home".
For the calculation of the indicator, the nine answer options were summarized into four cate-gories: "at least every week" (daily or almost daily; 5 - 6 days a week; 3 - 4 days a week; 1 - 2 days a week); "every month" (2 - 3 days a month; once a month), "less than once a month" (less than once a month) and "never" (not in the last 12 months; never in my life). In addition the category "at least monthly heavy drinking" was created, in which the categories "at least every week" and "every month" are summarized.
